The Empire of Lights | René Magritte | 1954

René Magritte's painting L'Empire des lumières (circa 1954) is a surrealist work that juxtaposes night and day within a single scene. The lower part of the painting depicts a darkened street, with a lamppost casting a gentle glow near a house with illuminated windows. In contrast, the sky above is bright, filled with soft, fluffy clouds typical of daylight. This interplay between light and dark creates a dreamlike, almost unsettling atmosphere, challenging the viewer’s perception of reality and time. The reflection of the lamplight on the water in the foreground further enhances the surreal quality of this iconic piece.
