This illustration, The Hypocrites by Gustave Doré, created circa 1861, is part of his series for Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. The scene depicts Dante and Virgil encountering the souls of hypocrites in the eighth circle of Hell. The figures are shown wearing heavy cloaks that appear gilded but are lined with lead, symbolizing their deceitful nature—beautiful on the outside but burdensome within. The somber procession of cloaked figures contrasts with the dark, oppressive surroundings, emphasizing their eternal punishment. Doré’s meticulous detail and dramatic lighting convey the gravity of the allegory and its moral themes.
