This is "Christ on the Cross" by Carl Heinrich Bloch, painted circa 1870. The artwork captures the biblical scene of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is a dramatic and emotional depiction with a strong sense of narrative. Christ is the central figure, shown nailed to the cross, with his head bowed and a crown of thorns upon his head. The INRI inscription is placed above him, indicating the charge against him, "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews."

Below the cross, several figures are depicted in various states of mourning and contemplation. The group likely represents the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and the Apostle John, as traditionally depicted in scenes of the crucifixion. The sky behind Christ transitions from stormy darkness above to a lighter, more serene hue near the horizon, perhaps indicating the transition from death to the promise of resurrection. Bloch's treatment of light and shadow, along with the emotional expressions of the figures, imbues the scene with a profound sense of tragedy and sanctity. The painting is noted for its realism, careful composition, and the way it captures the solemnity of the moment.
